Preparing for Calmare Scrambler Therapy with Dr. Orlando

Congratulations on scheduling your Calmare Scrambler Therapy treatment with Dr. Orlando! So now what? You might be feeling a mix of excitement and nervousness—understandable when facing a new treatment. To help you make the most of your experience, here are some helpful tips to prepare you and as always, feel free to reach out directly with any concerns:

A Week or More Before Your Session

Review Your Medications:

Certain drugs can interfere with the effectiveness of Calmare Scrambler Therapy. These include medications that influence nerve activity, such as anticonvulsants, antidepressants, and neuroleptics—examples are Lyrica and gabapentin. If you’re unsure, check with your healthcare provider about whether you should pause or adjust any medications beforehand. Sometimes, it may take a week or longer to safely taper off these drugs, so plan accordingly.

The Day Before Your Appointment

Plan to Dress for Accessibility:

Since electrodes will need to be placed on specific parts of your body, wearing suitable clothing is important. For example:

  • If your pain is mainly in your lower back, legs, or feet, opt for shorts or skirts paired with a T-shirt.

  • For shoulder, arm, or hand pain, choose a short-sleeve shirt that allows easy access.

  • If your discomfort involves your stomach, chest, or back, wear a top that can be easily lifted or removed.

The Day of Your Treatment

Arrive Prepared:

Plan to arrive a little early so you can settle in and discuss any last-minute questions with Dr. Orlando.

Eat and Hydrate Wisely:

Have a light, balanced snack and drink plenty of water beforehand. Staying well-hydrated helps keep your blood sugar stable and can prevent dizziness or discomfort during the session.

Dress Comfortably & Bring Entertainment:

Wear loose, comfortable clothing and consider bringing a book or other forms of entertainment to help you relax and pass the time during your treatment.

Be Ready to Talk About Your Pain:

Dr. Orlando will ask detailed questions about your pain, such as:

Where do you feel it?

How intense is it?

Are there specific borders or areas where it’s worse?

During the session, Dr. Orlando may also gently touch or assess different regions to identify where the nerves need the new signal. Unlike traditional methods, there’s no need to mark pain areas beforehand—assessment happens in real-time. It’s normal for pain sensations to shift slightly between sessions; this indicates your nervous system is adjusting.

During Your Treatment

What to Expect Sensation-wise:

As electrodes are placed and activated, you’ll feel a distinct sensation—often described as tingling or vibrating—yet it shouldn’t be painful. Feel free to communicate with Dr. Orlando about what you’re experiencing so he can adjust the intensity for maximum comfort.

Duration:

Each session generally lasts about one hour, 15 minutes of discussion and electrode placement followed by 45 minutes of Calmare Scrambler Therapy. You’ll be comfortably seated or lying down as the machine works on targeting nerve signals.

After Your Session

Notice Changes in Your Pain:

Most patients experience pain relief within half an hour to a few hours after the first session. With each subsequent treatment, the pain tends to diminish further and remain absent for longer periods. Keep a pain journal noting your ratings, how long relief lasts, and any other observations to share with Dr. Orlando—this also helps you track your progress.

Ease Back into Your Routine:

Once the pain subsides, it’s tempting to jump back into activities like gardening, walking, or dancing. However, your body needs time to adapt. Start slowly to avoid overexertion, which could trigger discomfort or hinder progress.

Plan for Continued Treatments:

Keep attending sessions until your pain-free period lasts at least 24 hours. If you reach this point and the pain doesn’t return, you might be able to skip the next appointment. Typically, about 10 sessions are needed, but if pain reappears months or even years later, additional treatments can be scheduled to help maintain your relief.
